Rue David Bovie, named after one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, will officially open in the 13th arrondissement of Paris on the city’s Left Bank.
The street was recently built as part of a major renovation of the neighborhood that also includes the modernist François Mitterrand University Library. The street, about 50 meters long, was previously known to city planners under the working name “VoieDZ/13”. There is no record of Bowie having his own street anywhere in the world. Bowie, who died on January 10, 2016 of liver cancer, would have celebrated his 77th birthday on Monday. Paris played a less important role in Bowie’s life than London, Berlin and Los Angeles, but French avant-garde culture influenced his visual style.
