A maximum of 20,000 people will be able to admire this historical monument, the most visited in Greece, per day. They will need to get the exact time in which they can reach the Acropolis, during the 12 hours that the site will be available to visit. The new system will be introduced on a trial basis on September 4, the Ministry adds.

The decision was made to protect the 2,500-year-old Acropolis and “enhance the visitor experience”. A similar system will then be introduced from April 1 next year for other Greek archaeological sites.

According to Greece’s national statistics agency Elstat, more than three million people visited the Acropolis last year, compared with 1.2 million in 2021, during the coronavirus pandemic. In July, during the two weeks when Greece was affected by an extremely strong heat wave, the hours for visiting that monument were limited several times.
