Chaos in France: Explosions in Marseille, arms shop robbed, over 1100 arrested

About 45,000 police officers were sent to the streets of France, more than the previous night, and armored personnel carriers were also spotted. The government asked the regional authorities to cancel the night bus and tram lines.

The unrest began on Tuesday after police shot and killed a 17-year-old Algerian boy named Nachel M. The police officer who shot Nachel has apologized to his family, but the teenager’s death has fueled resentment over police behavior and racial profiling in the French suburbs.

Demonstrators burned buildings and vehicles and looted shops, and the violence plunged President Emmanuel Macron into his worst leadership crisis since the Yellow Vest protests that began in 2018. Riots flared across the country, including in the cities of Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg and Lille, and Paris after a police officer shot and killed Nachel M., a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan descent, on Tuesday in the suburb of Nanterre.
