A third of the world’s seas receive protected status

One in ten species living in the world’s seas is threatened with extinction, which is why members of the United Nations reached a historic agreement after ten years of negotiations.
According to the Treaty on the World’s Seas, 30 percent of the Earth’s water surface will receive protected status by 2030, in order to preserve and restore the ecosystem in them. In the new protected areas, there will be limited hunting, certain exact routes that vessels can follow and deep mining, which includes any activity of extracting from the seabed deeper than 200 meters.
The agreement was reached after a session at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, which lasted 38 hours.
