The popular Mexican tequila in the grip of climate change

National Margarita Day in the US was marked in the shadow of scientists’ warnings that climate change threatens the main pollinator of the agave plant, without which there would be no real tequila, the main ingredient in the margarita.
According to data from the American Distillers Association, last year tequila and mezcal were the economically fastest growing category of spirits, CNN reports.
Scientists around the world have predicted that water shortages caused by climate change will continue to put enormous pressure on food producers in the future, and wine and spirits are unfortunately not exempt from this prediction.
A 2019 study found that the climate crisis, livestock and overgrazing and other economic activities could disrupt the cultivation and distribution of agave, the main ingredient in tequila.
