The citizens of Switzerland will decide in a referendum whether they want to keep payment in cash, the association “Free Swiss Movement” (FBS) announced today, revealing that it has collected enough signatures to organize a public statement.
In many economies around the world, cash payments are slowly falling out of use as electronic payments become the standard for transactions in digitalized societies, making it easier for the state to monitor the actions of its citizens, the association said.
The association wants the Swiss currency law, which governs how the central bank and government manage the money supply, to add a provision that there must always be a “sufficient quantity” of banknotes or coins in circulation.
