Tunisians vote in a referendum on expanding presidential powers

Tunisians are voting today in a referendum on a new constitution that critics of President Kais Said fear could destroy the democracy that emerged from the 2011 revolution, giving him near-total powers.

The vote will take place on the anniversary of Said’s sudden move against the elected parliament when he toppled the government, imposed martial law and began ruling by decree.

It is not known when the results will be announced after the polls close at 9pm CET.

Given the remarkably low enthusiasm among the majority of Tunisians and the boycott of the main parties, analysts expect the outcome of the vote to be “yes”, with a low voter turnout.
