Conservative Armin Lachet (CDU) has not yet acknowledged the harsh reality and hopes to become chancellor despite the worst result since the party’s founding

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), are in a political knockdown after catastrophically poor results in Germany’s parliamentary elections on Sunday.

The ruling coalition, which has had a chancellor at the head of the state for the last 16 years (Angela Merkel), has achieved the worst result since its founding.
